Parenting Plan
Our mission is to respect, observe, and take care of our mealworms. We will meet their needs, conduct (harmless) experiments, and we will do everything possible to provide them with the best possible box.
- Mealworms are photosensitive – they fear being in the light because it makes them more visible to predators, so we keep them in an inclosed shoebox. We also give them piles of oat bran to live in, as well as fresh fruit to eat.
- Every couple of days, we visit our lovely mealworms. We clean out their boxes, give them fresh oat bran, and give them a new piece of fruit.
- We do not give them fruits that could ferment in the box. Instead, we mostly give them apples, which brown over time but keep fairly well and maintain their moisture – which is what the mealworms are really after.
- During the pupa stage, they no longer need food as they are in a dormant state. However, we clean their exoskeletons out of the box and continue to keep a close eye on them.
